The major difference is the ease of creating vlans with tomato in my opinion. You can do it all from the GUI and assign everything there. You can do all that stuff with Merlin / ASUSWRT too but you'll need to dig into the command line to assign everything and create all your virtual SSIDs. Upload them in the Asuswrt-Merlin web Administration / System menu. It will accept them if they will work or give you a wrong file message if they won't. The "Apply" button then restarts httpd and you will be back at login screen. I think your issue may be that you are using the stock ASUS firmware, rather than the "merlin" version, which has extra goodies, such as (maybe) the choice of logging destination. Have lots of settings/PF etc that I would like to keep by restoring .CFG file if possible onto newer Asus running Asuswrt-Merlin. Seems like AC-3200 or AC-2900 (RT-AC86U). Asuswrt-Merlin is good example how different focus on firmware may save router from going to recycle bin. Before abandoning old router, try out if issues are not coming down to router software. I have an ASUS RT-N66U and find the ASUSWRT-Merlin firmware is much more stable and featureful than the standard one. It fixed a lot of my issues including this one. I used to also have to periodically reboot the router due to overheating that has happening also. When Tim asked me to take a look at the ASUSWRT-Merlin firmware for the popular ASUS RT-N66U Dark Knight, I'll admit I was skeptical. This firmware is the brainchild of Eric Sauvageau, who goes by RMerlin in the SNB forums. What I found was a refreshingly different focus from other "alternative" firmware. Asuswrt-Merlin is an enhanced version of Asuswrt, the firmware used by Asus's modern routers. The goal of this project is to fix issues and bring some minor functionality adjustments to the original Asus firmware.
